Government’s Bold Actions in Education: Reform or Another Loophole?

In recent times, the Government of Nepal has taken several bold and visible steps to reform the education sector. Increased regulation, stricter monitoring, and an emphasis on transparency signal a clear intent to improve standards and accountability across schools and institutions.

However, an important question remains: will these reforms address the smaller yet deeply rooted practices that burden students and parents? One such example is the issuance of character certificates—often a mandatory requirement—where concerns have been raised about unofficial fees and inconsistent processes in some schools.

If the government’s objective is genuine reform, then attention must extend beyond large policy decisions to include everyday practices within institutions. Eliminating unnecessary financial burdens and ensuring fair, standardized procedures for documents like character certificates would reflect a more comprehensive and meaningful change.

Bold actions are commendable, but their true impact will depend on how effectively they address both systemic issues and ground-level realities. Only then can reforms lead to a more transparent, equitable, and student-friendly education system.
